In this piece on TotalFilm, they take a look at Keanu Reeves different cyberpunk work, particularly his starring function in Robert Longo’s 1995 movie, Johnny Mnemonic. I all the time favored this movie and thought that it didn’t deserve the extent of derision and dismissal that it obtained.
William Gibson himself tweeted a hyperlink to this evaluate with the remark:
“I’ll take this completely non-scathing, traditionally contextual evaluate of Johnny Mnemonic, thanks. Takes some time, generally!”
Johnny Mnemonic is a movie that merely should be seen to be believed. Tailored for the display by influential cyberpunk creator William Gibson, who wrote the quick story the movie is predicated on (and whose 1984 novel Neuromancer used the time period ‘the matrix’ for our on-line world over a decade earlier than the Wachowskis), the movie focuses on Reeves’ titular character, who shops gigabytes of knowledge in a mind implant. He’s a mnemonic courier, which implies he smuggles the knowledge saved in his head from shopper to shopper. To get more room, he needed to delete his childhood reminiscences – and, regardless of realizing that overloading his brain-drive might be deadly, the movie begins with him taking over way over he can deal with. That data lodged in his head seems to be crucial, however within the short-term, it’s about to kill him if he can’t take away it in time. If that wasn’t dire sufficient, the Yakuza is on his path, intent on slicing and cryogenically freezing his head to protect the dear knowledge inside.
Look past Johnny Mnemonic’s madcap parts, then, and also you’ll discover a captivating and all too related remedy of points that also plague our society over 20 years later, similar to The Matrix. Whereas each movies are nowhere close to an identical, they share similarities that makes Johnny Mnemonic the perfect double function with any of The Matrix motion pictures. And who might flip down Keanu Reeves being rescued by a cybernetic dolphin?
