Initially of every yr, IEEE Spectrum makes an attempt to foretell the longer term. It may be tough, however we do our greatest, filling the January concern with a few dozen stories, quick and lengthy, about developments the editors count on to make information within the coming yr.

For different tales, we should go farther out on a limb. A living proof: the outline of a {hardware} pockets for Bitcoin that the corporate previously often known as Sq. (which not too long ago modified its identify to Block) is creating however gained’t formally touch upon. One factor we will predict with confidence, although, is that Spectrum readers, conversant in the vicissitudes of technical growth work, will perceive if a few of these initiatives don’t, in reality, pan out. That’s nonetheless okay. Engineering, like life, is as a lot concerning the journey because the vacation spot.
