In July 2019 FPV was turned on its head when utterly out of the blue DJI launched the Digital FPV system based mostly on their Ocusync P1 know-how.
This technique introduced 720p FPV with variable latency as little as 28m in a simple-to-use off-the-shelf package deal. Out of the field, it wowed customers with its clear picture high quality and easy setup.
This shocked the FPV market and Fats Shark, the market chief in FPV goggles on the time was left scrambling and rapidly reacted by releasing ByteFrost, a digital system based mostly on Divimath know-how. Whereas this technique didn’t fairly stand as much as DJI’s providing it was the delivery of what we now have right this moment, referred to as HDZero. Initially bought as Shark Byte below the Fats Shark Model HDZero is a 720p fastened near-real-time latency digital FPV system that’s preferrred for racing.
Whereas the system had a sluggish begin below the Shark Byte model 2021 has been a 12 months of large enchancment and growth for the HDZero system with Divimath taking the lead on advertising and marketing and growth. There have been plenty of enhancements with the system now comprising of 5 VTX’s and new cameras from Runcam and Foxeer. There may be additionally promise of a brand new excessive energy VTX and three new receiver modules in early 2022.
What’s stark is the change within the growth of each methods. Whereas within the early days DJI had a transparent lead in adoption with its superb efficiency, continued assist and new options like 50Mbps mode and elevated vary. Right this moment however issues couldn’t be totally different. The system has seen no new options in over a 12 months, annoying points and firmware bugs stay unfixed and essential new options equivalent to canvas mode, mentioned by DJIs companions are nowhere to be seen. Whereas the system has had new cameras launched by third events like CaddX and Runcam the general system appears to have fallen into DJI’s normal latter phases of its product life cycles which we now have seen time and time once more the place they slowly fade earlier than being made finish life or changed altogether.
However, issues at Divimath and HDZero couldn’t be extra totally different, in 2021 the system gained the MultiGP with Evan Turner. They’re embracing and speaking with the FPV neighborhood by social media and their growth is in full swing. Right this moment HDZero is rising from power to power and constructing a loyal buyer base that not solely desires to assist the corporate but in addition feels they’re shopping for right into a product that has a future.
It’s additionally value mentioning that whereas HDZero has taken a lot of the management of their system again in home proper now Divimath are a semiconductor firm and their objective stays to produce the chipsets and underlying know-how for any manufacture to make use of and never simply manufacture the top product themselves.
Like Nextwave who turned the key participant in Analog FPV, Divimath desires to do the identical for digital with their HDZero know-how.
Right this moment FPV is within the beginnings of the transition right into a digital future and whereas nobody is anticipating analogue to fade in a single day right this moment the taking part in subject stays extra stage between the 2 firms than ever earlier than with the pendulum swinging towards HDZero favour. As time goes on persons are beginning to query DJI’s long run objectives in FPV with the shortage of any updates and even when the system will nonetheless be right here in 12 months time. Add to that there are rumours of extra entrants to the market across the nook with Orqa set to point out what they’ve been engaged on at CES this week.
The way forward for digital FPV appears to be one with many gamers concerned and extra segmentation than the neighborhood is used too nonetheless right this moment HDZero appears to be taking the lead above the remainder, for now at the very least.
