Google’s John Mueller mentioned on Reddit that Ghost directories don’t impression search engine marketing or affect your Google rankings. John replied to a thread about this saying “no impact.”

How do “ghost directories” have an effect on search engine marketing?
For instance, if area.com/instance/ is a 404 and area.com/instance/page-a and area.com/instance/page-b are stay 200 pages, how would this have an effect on the search engine marketing of these pages if they’ve hyperlinks pointing to them?
I’ve heard this known as ghost directories. Any ideas or insights could be appreciated.
