Human beings talk utilizing way over our phrases. Along with the phrases themselves, we additionally talk that means utilizing tone, gestures, and facial expressions — all of which we lose in written communication. To compensate, we make the most of emojis and stylistic parts to convey that means and intent. For instance, we are able to italicize a phrase to point out that it’s actually vital. However sarcasm is commonly troublesome to mission by means of writing, resulting in miscommunication. To make sure that these miscommunications change into a factor of the previous, Ben Sommerf constructed this sarcasm converter.
This can be a small system that intercepts the textual content typed on a keyboard and converts it into what the web agrees is sarcastic: alternating uppercase and lowercase letters in a sentence. This makes the distinction between “I really like your costume” and “I lOvE yOuR dReSs.” The latter works higher than a watch roll emoji to make it clear that you just really hate their costume. The issue is that typing like that may be a ache, as a result of it’s important to maintain down the shift key for each different letter. There are apps and on-line converters you should utilize, however this system works with any customary USB keyboard and any fashionable pc.
The converter makes use of two Raspberry Pi Pico improvement boards. The primary acts as a USB host system, so it may learn the textual content coming from the keyboard. The second Pico acts as a USB HID keyboard and sends the transformed textual content to a linked pc. On this approach, the Sarcasm Converter is similar to the sorts of units used for man-in-the-middle assaults. However as a substitute of intercepting key presses for nefarious functions, this makes each different alpha character a capital. A toggle swap on the highest of the system’s 3D-printed enclosure lets Sommerf swap to sarcasm mode at any time when he’s feeling feisty.
