The 2022 MacBook Air is more likely to change into the Mac of the yr due to its broad enchantment. Nonetheless, there’s additionally rising anticipation for what Apple has deliberate for iMac within the coming 12 months. Following final yr’s launch of the consumer-based 24-inch iMac, the expectation this time round is for Cupertino to announce a extra professional-friendly mannequin. This is what I hope to see on this yr’s new iMac.
The brand new iMac Professional
Again in December 2017, Apple launched its first and solely iMac Professional. With a beginning worth of $5,000, the iMac Professional solely discovered restricted success, and in March 2021, Apple retired it. A month later, the corporate introduced the colourful 24-inch iMac, the primary Apple desktop to function Apple silicon. This mannequin joined the Intel-based (and consumer-friendly) 27-inch mannequin that was final up to date in August 2020.
A brand new iMac Professional will nearly definitely change that mannequin with consumers given a alternative between buying one with an M1 Professional or M1 Max professional-focused systems-on-a-chip (SoC). These are the identical choices discovered on final yr’s MacBook Professional.
What in regards to the display screen measurement and high quality?
The rumor mill has been in all places relating to the iMac Professional 2022’s display screen measurement and high quality. Earlier rumors urged Apple would improve the display screen measurement on this mannequin because it moved from 21.5 inches to 24 inches on the inexpensive mannequin. Later, the rumors pivoted, with most now anticipating Apple to stay with 27 inches for the brand new iMac Professional. High quality-wise, earlier rumors stated the following iMac Professional would function mini-LED; newer tales, nonetheless, stated Apple would keep on with LCD.
I will cut up the distinction right here and assume Apple will preserve the display screen measurement at 27 inches for the iMac Professional and supply the mannequin with the choice of LCD or mini-LED, with the latter far more costly, as you may see beneath.
What in regards to the 24-inch iMac?
With an “M2” SoC anticipated to launch later this yr on the following MacBook Air, Apple might (or ought to) refresh the 24-inch iMac to at the very least embody this SoC as an possibility. In any other case, this laptop, not but a yr previous, will really feel more and more previous in comparison with newer Macs.
Will all this in thoughts, the 2022 iMac lineup is more likely to seem like this:
- 24-inch iMac (2021) and/or 24-inch iMac (2020)
- 27-inch iMac Professional (2022) with M1 Professional or M1 Professional Max
Specs
Past the show and SoC, I would count on we’ll see the brand new iMac Professional with as much as a 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU with as a lot as 64GB of reminiscence and 8GB of storage. From a pricing perspective, I would not be stunned to see the iMac Professional 2022 begin at round $2,000 (vs. $1,799 on the present 27-inch iMac) with the highest-priced mannequin considerably extra, maybe as excessive as $5,000 or $6,000, relying on the specs.
Supply: Apple
Shade redux
As I’ve typically famous, I am a giant supporter of Apple’s determination as of late to transcend silver and house grey as colour selections throughout its whole product line. I count on we’ll see extra of the identical with this yr’s new iMac Professional, though there won’t be as many colour selections as discovered on the 24-inch mannequin. In spite of everything, these will likely be geared to the skilled set.
If I needed to guess, Apple will convey again the darker house grey end from the 2017 iMac Professional and supply silver and perhaps common house grey. Past this, do not count on to see an iMac Professional in a vibrant colour.
Time to get excited
With the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Professional and 24-inch iMac final yr, Apple mixed new internals with new designs, creating among the finest Macs round. In 2022, it is nearly definitely going to be finished once more, first with a redesigned MacBook Air, then with a refreshed 27-inch iMac Professional. Each new merchandise may launch as early as March, though Fall 2022 sounds far more possible for the iMac Professional. Keep tuned.
